Clients may explicitly turn to religion and spirituality to draw strength and hope during difficult times. They may also do so implicitly. Religious and spiritual themes emerge throughout play therapy. This can seem especially true when using sand tray in play therapy.
Religious and spiritual themes may manifest through miniatures used to represent specific religions. They may also manifest through a variety of symbols related to hope, nature, and the elements. They manifest in other ways as well.
Play therapists can invite and support religious themes with the miniatures they have available in their playrooms. They may also invite them through the reverent presence of tenemos.
This workshop offers an overview of religious and spiritual themes as they emerge in the sand tray, multicultural competencies, and how our own inherent bias may keep us from noticing some themes or even devaluing them.
The workshop is designed to help play therapists become aware of the religious and spiritual play therapy themes that may emerge in sand tray. It is also designed to increase awareness of how our own beliefs may enhance or inhibit our supporting play themes related to religious and spiritual beliefs that are different from our own.
- Identify religious and spiritual play therapy themes that emerge in play therapy
- Compare and contrast light and shadow aspects of religious and spiritual themes that manifest when using sand tray in play therapy
- Discuss the benefits of using sand tray to explore religious and spiritual themes in play therapy
